      Nowadays, information has got an importance more than ever. This importance requires it to be shared. Computer networks have been the most important tool which is used for sharing information. The widespread use of computer networks and the variety of information have made the administration and security of computer networks matters take place. In some situations, the communications between people should be analysed in order to prevent some illegal actions and fix some problems took place in network.

      The software tools used for analysing the communications took place in a computer network performs some action named as protocol analysis. In this thesis, TCP and UDP traffic are analysed using an application developed by the help of object oriented approach under Windows. For this purpose, ethernet, IP, TCP and UDP header sections are considered. The checksum calculation algortihms used by these protocols are evaluated. Winpcap software architecture is used to capture the packets transiting in the network. Some tests are performed in order to measure the performance of this software architecture for storing the packets in a text file.

      The performance of the software tools used for administering the computer networks has got a great importance. I hope this study will add to the development of other sudies about this subject.
