Summary:

Electronic medium are practical and useful tools for storing, processing and sharing information compared to old methods. The developments in computer and network technologies allow that distributed information can be more effectively stored and securely shared. In addition to these advantages, these processes can be implemented with very little effort and cost. Therefore, database systems are widely used to store and process data on computers and networks.

In this study, a distributed database system is implemented for the radiology department at the faculty of medicine at Karadaniz Technical University in Turkey. In the system developed, hospitals can not only apply their cures locally but also implement their cures more effectively by exchanging patient information. Then, this nation-wide distributed database system is realized to improve the quality of diagnosis, treatment, and planning in radiology. The units that apply similar cure methods can also use the system.

Today's computer systems are becoming distributed according to the nature of problems. Therefore, to achieve these goals, a client/server model based distributed database system is developed and implemented. In this system each hospital uses a local database system to store the patient information locally. A central database system is also implanted to store and registers all data and exchanges among hospitals so a central application server creates and archives of the information coming from hospitals. As a client each hospital can exchange the patient information among hospitals and access to the central or other local databases. Thus, this system aims to reduce the amount of deficiency, erroneous treatment, and planning introduced by the inexperienced and infrastructure disqualified hospitals. Clients can send their local information to the center or another hospital via the central application server. Our final aim is to integrate this database system with the system used in Europe and America. This integration process is partially realized and information exchange among the systems in Turkey and abroad is now possible.
