Summary:

      Medical data archiving, communication and processing requires large amount of storage, bandwidth and computations. This thesis primarily deals with the threshold, texture based 3D volume rendering, and web based Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). Then, we explored the details of the 3D volume rendering techniques and web based PACS. An interactive volume rendering and segmentation techniques are used to visualize three dimensional tissues and organs in the volumetric data. Here, a statistical segmentation approach is developed to segment the three dimensional tissues and organs.

In this study, Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard is used to archives and communicate the medical data. A web based PACS system that includes brightness-contrast, zoom, magnifier, rotate, filter and some special image processing operators is implemented to help clinicians during diagnosis process. A ray casting method is also employed to visualize the segmented volumetric data. These approaches may easily be integrated to other PACS systems.

      Test material such as CT, MR, Tomography and X-Ray images are taken from the Radiology Department at Karadeniz Technical University Farabi Hospital. Practically, the developed system is examined in the same hospital.

Finally, a threshold and texture based three dimensional volume rendering system is developed and integrated to a web based PACS.
