Summary:

The main concern of the thesis is Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). As being related to PACS, the historical improvement, implementation strategies, and models have been reviewed, as well as current technologies, infrastructure and technological capabilities. Some work has been done on PACS architecture and some methods have been developed to overcome the problems encountered during PACS design

progress.

The work focuses mainly on reading, viewing and image processing over DICOM file format. The archive server, which is module in the PACS architecture, is developed using open source INDY components. To transfer the files through the network TCP client/server architecture is used.

DICOM-formatted files provided by Karadeniz Technical University Farabi Hospital are used as an experimental material. These files correspond to DICOM images that are captured from the different parts of a human body and contain either single-frame images or multi-frame images.

As a result for hospital environments we developed a sophisticated application that takes the images from modalities, put them in archives, and examine them using query/retrieve methods.
