Summary:

Cockroaches are short length, speedily growing, dangerous and persistent pests that is spread all over the world. They are a major public health concern in hospitals, kitchens and food manufacturing plants because they are able to carry a wide variety of bacteria and other pathogenic organisms (virus, nematode, protozoa, fungi, ......etc).

In this study cockroaches species, population densities and distribution in hospitals were caried on. This investigation was made in six different hospitals in Trabzon between September, 1998 and July, 1999.

It was determined that among these tree species B.germanica was exist at all the hospitals and dominant to other species with rate of %98.25 population density. For that reason this study was concentrated on this species.

It was detected that the nimfal stage of B.germanica has the rate of %70.81 population density in examined hospitals.

The population density of B.germanica in hospital kitchens had the rate of %83.61 and in sick rooms the rate was %14.08.

This study showed that population densities and the infestation rate of B.germanica were not significantly related to the management type of the hospitals such as University, national, SSK and Private hospitals.

The population density of cockroaches appeared to be strongly correlated with sufficient food and water, warm temperature and humidity. In addition it was related with the insect control program and cleanness of the hospitals.
