Summary: In this study the cytogenetic effects of pesticides (Malathion and Linuron) were investigated on root tip cells of Helianthus annuus L. The seeds were treated with 3, 7, 55 and 60 ppm concentration of the insecticide Malathion; 30, 120, 240 and 500 ppm concentration of the herbicide Linuron for 3, 6 and 12 hours. The mitotic and phase indices were determined and chromosomal abnormalities were investigated in both control and test groups. It was found that pesticides had a marked mitodepressive action on mitosis mitotic abnormalities were increased and the mitotic index was decreased depending on the concentration and duration time of the pesticides applied. The types of abnormalities observation were included: Chromosome stickness and contraction, scattered chromosome, lagging chromosome, and chromatin bridge. It is considered that the pesticides may have genotoxic effects in humanbeing. Keywords: Malathion, Linuron, Helianthus annuus L., Mitotic index, Chromosomal abnormalities.
