Summary:

In this study, the chemical and mineralogical composition of the sludge produced by the drinking water treatment operation at Trabzon Drinking Water Treatment plant were investigated.

The analysis of the supernatant and the settled portion of the sludge sample collected from the plant were carried out. The settled portion of the sludge sample was analysed using XRD (X-Ray Difractiometer) and DTA (Differential Thermic Analysis) for mineralogical composition and using the standard chemical methods and AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrometer) for head assay. (The chemical analysis of the sludge sample was carried out bye Acme Analytical Labs.Ltd./Canada ). The chemical and mineralogical analyses showed that the sludge consisted mainly of SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3.

Furthermore, corn and bean seeds were tried to cultivate using distilled water and the supernatant portion of the sludge sample and the growth of these seed in both medical was then examined. The better growth of the seed cultivated using the supernatant portion of the sludge sample was observed. The findings in showed that the waste sludge produced by the drinking water treatment plant have no adverse effect on the plant growth and the environmental.
