Because of the difficulties collecting the related data, only four months, Jenuary, February, March and April in 2009, of data taken from the health care institutions situated in Trabzon and Rize cities are analized. It has been concluded that highest ASMW (amounts of specific medical waste) are in Maçka Hospital (1,82 kg/bed/day) and KTU Farabi Hospital (1,74 kg/bed/day) while lowest amounts are in Trabzon Yavuz Selim Bone Hospital (0,36 kg/bed/day) and Trabzon Chest Diseases Hospital (0,43 kg/bed/day). Medical waste data belonging to Farabi Hospital for 2006, 2007 and 2008 years are also discussed as a special case study.

Based on the daily average amount of medical waste transported to TRAB-RI-KAB transfer station is 2906 kg, it has been determined the station should run 10-15 hours a day in order to sterilize all the waste. Since this is infeasible, the capacity of station should be increased.

As a result, it is believed that the management of medical waste may be carried out better through further education and control performed by authority.
