Summary:

      The number of vessels and tonnage have increased regarding the development of World trade. Increasing number of vessels has led to heavy vessel traffic. The security of navigation in deep sea has been easier with the rise of technology. However, providing the security of cargo, vessel and environment has been literally difficult in the resticted navigational area such as harbours, docks, straits. In order to remove this obsracle, marine masters have consulted local sea experts in that area. Requested demans have initially revealed maritime pilots and pilotage. Developing harbours and vessels intensifying vessel traffic have provided pilotage organizations an their improvements. In Maritime history, first regulations about maritime pilots were made in 1804 with the Law of Maritime in Ottaman Empire. The premise aim of this academic paper is to present the state of pilotage and maritime pilot profile which have 210 years legal history. All results and findings have been conducted via questionnare and interview. 60 maritime pilots have been participants work in Turkish straits. Findings have been evaluated by means of chi-square and frequency test in SPSS 16 programme. As a result of this study, it has been detected that there have been certain legal drawbacks in Turkish Pilotage Services and maritime pilot regulations. Current data is compared with findings in other countries and suggestions have been made about the present subject matter. Depending upon the maritime pilot rewiews, this research is regarded as an example study so as to carry Turkish Pilotage Services to better standarts.
