Summary:

Notworking at sea for a long time and stop working in a short time are very important problems of maritime industry. A questionary was designed on assumption that the problem arised because of job satisfaction. Questions were formed according to the scale of Likert by five. Hypothesises of study were constituted to determine between the Turkish seafarers’ occupational satisfaction who work on the Turkish flagged dry cargo vessels navigating on the near coastal voyage area and retiring from work. The data of the questionaries were analysed by chi-square cross tables in SPSS. The reliability of the questions were tested and determined as high grade. Overall accuracy of hypothesises were investigated.

Finally, it was determined that the seafarer’s resigning from duty is related with satisfaction of job, salary as tangible or spiritual, phisical conditions of working place, labour contract and vacation period, social insurance, cabin, accommodation, nutrition, safety, management of ship and company but is not related with satisfaction of the possibility of promotion, co-workers, communication and port of towns. Furthermore, it was determined that the seafarer’s retiring from job at sea is related with the job satisfaction and being far from his/her family but is not related with the satisfaction of being far from his/her lover and the occupational conditions. It is tought that the cautions will be taken in the view of suggestions going to raise the seafarer’s satisfaction level and to find permanent solution to the shortage of sefarer. It is tought that the sefarers whose job satisfaction level will increase are going to leave the idea of the resigning from duty and retiring from work at sea and also going to work for more long time at sea as a seafarer.
