Summary:

In this Study, the trend analysis of vessels that pass through Istanbul and Canakkale straits has been investigated according to years and their gross tonnage. Many factors affect the trend analysis of the Turkish Straits. These factors include the geographical structure of the Strait, the currents seen in the Strait, weather conditions and natural events. Apart from these, national and international economic changes and the trade agreements affect the passage of the ship. Such factors change the ships tonnage and the number of their passes . In my study , these factors have been examined in detail. Moreover, this situation has been tried to be proven with methods and tests. In the results, especially done with the annual data analysis it has been found out that there is a trend in the direction of decreasing in Istanbul and Canakkale Straits. The present and foreseen vessel traffic volume and continuously increasing number of the vessels carrying dangerous cargo create threats the safety of life, goods and environment in Turkish Straits which are providing the biological and oceanographic relation between the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea with the linkage to Aegean Sea and which are used for international maritime navigation. Despite the detection of the decrease in the number of vessels passing , it is stated that the GRT of vessel has risen. As the result of this situation, It can be foreseen that The risk of the damage to marine environment will greatly increase because of the maritime accidents. For that, VTSs taking preventative measures which can minimize the risk is suggested.
