      Today, approximately 90 percent of World trade is carried out by sea transportation. In this context, the inspections carried out to prevent marine accidents and to ensure this prevention take a very important place. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the reasons of detention due to machine deficiencies and ship flag, ship age, ship type, class institution and port state. Data used in this research about the ship detention reasons between 2016-2018 were taken from the Black Sea Memorandum of Understanding official website. IBM SPSS Statistics 22 program was used to analyze the data. As a result, we found that there is a statistically significant relationship between the reasons of detention due to machine deficiencies and ship flag, ship age, gros tone, class institution and port state. On the other hand, we found that there is no significant relationship between ship type and detention reason. We believe that the results of this study provide significant insight not only for seamen, supervisors and shipowners but also for legislators working on new policies to prevent marine accidents.
