Summary:

Power quality is an important issue in wind energy systems. Nowadays, Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) has been used increasingly instead of traditionally used Static VAr Compensator and mechanically switched capacitor groups to improve the power quality. STATCOM is an inverter based device used to improve the power quality in transmission and distribution systems. Fixed parameter conventional PI controllers are usually used to control STATCOM devices. In this study, the STATCOM used in the wind energy system has a voltage-controlled inverter structure based on a five-level H-bridge. Indirect current control system with synchronous reference frame theory is used to produce gate pulses that is needed for the inverter. PI controller with parameters updated by a modified fuzzy logic controller is designed to control these currents. A model predictive controller is also used for comparison and validation purposes. The simulation results are compared with those of experimental results in order to test the modelling accuracy. Key Words: Wind energy systems, STATCOM,
