Summary:

This work analyses the short range indoor wireless fixed communication systems, studies their capacity and performances and searches possible improvements on their performances, power efficiency and widening applications. For this reason, the major short range fixed wireless communication systems Bluetooth, IrDA and ZigBee are subjected and their improvements on performance, power consumption, connection robustness and security are searched. The packet error rates (PER) and bit error rates (BER) are obtained for several data packet structures. In order to improve BER and PER performances the Turbo coding is added to the systems and the effects of the Turbo coding are exhibited by obtaining BER performances for AWGN, narrow-band and wide-band channels.

One of the major indoor wireless communication systems, which is Bluetooth, happens to be effective in decreasing the usage of the short cable connections. The system offers portability for a certain range for the systems communicating with each other. The initial design of Bluetooth was to replace communication cables of keyboards, mouse, printer, scanner etc. However, recent trends have shown that people would like to use the Bluetooth technology in the audio or even video systems. Thus, its inevitable expansion in the communication industry is well established. But, because of the air interference and the demands for longer battery life and range, some other technologies, such as ZigBee, have also been developed as a complement to Bluetooth. In order to study performances of the short range wireless systems, the systems are simulated by developed programs based on the Monte–Carlo type Rayleigh channel simulation.

The simulation results are obtained for several data packet types/formats. In order to obtain better BER performances, this thesis has finally concentrated on the Turbo coding, since it offers a very close performance to channel capacity limits. In order to design a low power radio, the importances of the Turbo type coding and equalization are exhibited. Without violating the low power, cost and low complexity architecture of the short range wireless standards, a design by Turbo coding is submitted by simplified Turbo Coding by a statistically obtained Look-Up Table (LUT).
