      Universal motors are widely used in industrial applications. Nowadays universal motors are finding many applications in household appliances, hence the speed control of universal motors are also gaining importance. Some of its familiar applications are washing machines, sewing machines, hair dryers, drills and mixers.

      The main objective in this master thesis is to study universal motor and its speed control using inverters with pulse width modulation (PWM). Inverter that has semiconductor switches is a DC/AC converter. This switches are controlled by using pulse width modulation technique.

      In this thesis subjects are mentioned in the following order; first of all single phase induction machines are introduced and then universal motors and its various speed control techniques are given. In the next section inverters and different modulation techniques used in inverters are introduced. Consequently the speed control of universal motor is made by using inverter with pulse width modulation . Results and points of view are explained.
