Summary: Mathematical morphology provides a systematic approach to analyze the geometric characteristics of signals or images and has been applied widely to many applications such as edge detection, image segmentation, noise suppression and so on. Image segmentation is one of the most important elements in automated image analysis and it is subdivides an image into its consistent objects or parts. In this study, general information about the mathematical morphology is given and the morphologic filters that is used frequently in image processing is studied. The watershed transform is used for image segmenation in the area of mathematical morphology is studied and its perfonmance was examined for different images.
