Summary:

Position control is one of the important applications in industrial automation systems as well as in many other areas such as communication systems, robotics, aircrafts, artillery, and so on. Tracking problem of moving objects is another dimension of the position control systems where the reference target is not constant but varies with time. The sensitivity of systems which are doing the position control and observation, are important. The sensitivity of the position control and tracking systems are important in order to improve the product quality for better and error free outcomes. The importance of the position controllers is best understood in the applications such as point hit targets, laser beam based medical operations, satellite dishes, guided missiles, aircraft artillery, targeted point drilling, and many other sensitive systems.

A position control system for a moving object is designed and implemented in this study. A radar-like system is built consisting of stepping motors and optical sensors. Due to their usage in position control system applications, stepping motors have been chosen to be used to controlling the tracking system. The stepping motors operate with the signals coming from the sensors that are used to detect the position of the reference object, which may be moving along an arbitrary path or stand still somewhere in the target area of the sensors. Once the place of the object is determined, the tracking system locks to the object and moves along following the path where the object goes either forward or backward. An interface is established with a computer through its parallel port for monitoring the tracking system.
