Summary: ECG has been in clinical use for the diagnosis and monitoring of heart abnormalities for close to a century. ECG measurement systems have followed trends in technological advancement becoming more reliable, able to perform a wider range of functions and simpler to use as time progressed. However, the measurements are done by wire based signal transmission that in many cases they are not desirable. Nowadays, wireless sensor networks are becoming more popular in medical instrumentation. This work, which is based on the medical applications of wireless sensor networks, aims to implement a portable ECG measurement system using the latest wireless technology. It is far from perfect, but exhibits the wireless data transfer and ECG measurements in a level that it is quite advancer than todays applications. The thesis starts with the theoretical background study of ECG, provides enough substances, designs an instrumentation amplifier circuit ( INA 2128 ) in order to monitor the ECG signals, implements a wireless link to a PC by using Microchip rfPIC Development Kit and finally concludes with implementation results. This thesis can be a reference to the future wireless sensor network studies. Although its results are not in a quality that it can be applied, they can easily be improved by making a couple of further enhancements on the hardware, such as using bigger memory sizes.
