Summary:

Induction motors with squirrel-cage rotors are used in many industrial applications because of their low cost and rugged construction. When operated directly from the line voltage, under a load, an induction motor operates at a nearly constant speed. However, by means of power electronic converters and microcontroller, it is possible to vary the speed of an induction motors.

In this thesis, the pulse width modulated (PWM) inverter circuit is designed and closed loop speed control of three phase induction motor is done. Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) used to realize three phase inverter.

PIC16F84 is used with a microcontroller to generate pulse width modulated signals. The three phase sinusoidal waves and triangle signal which obtained from output of the PIC16F84 microcontroller are converted into analog signals with DACO800 as digital to analog converter. These three phase sinusoidal waves are compared with the triangle signal at the comparator circuit and generated PWM signals. Then these PWM signals are applied to IGBT with a suitable condition and realized speed control of the three phase induction motor. Prevent the simultaneous conduct of lower and upper units of inverter branches dead time effect has been product.
