Summary:

Because of recent developments on the wireless industry, scientists have turned their attention to RF detection, location finding and positioning by wireless devices which are widely available. Other than positioning a wireless device, this thesis is dedicated to detect a difference in an indoor environment and locate a person who caused to change the environment in a controlled area, by a commercially available wireless device or an audio system. Therefore, this work also aims to compare RF and audio propagation channels using the experimental data.

Two experimental sets, RF and audio systems have been set to carry out the experiments. First an audio transmitter and receivers, basically they are loudspeaker and microphone sets, have been built with DAC and ADC converters and their PC interface through an USB connection. Secondly RF measurement and test bench that includes a vector signal generator, RF power amplifier, Vector Signal Analyzer and designed antennas for frequency bands of considered standards, i.e. Bluetooth, WiMax and RFID. Thus channel sounding techniques for both audio and RF systems are the important part of this work. However, the main effort has been shown on the intruder detection and positioning by identifying a steady-state environment and detecting a change in the environmental variables through the channel measurements. In this thesis, in order to locate the place of a person or device made the difference, four reference location points are used to interpret or train the system. The experimental results have shown that both systems can observe a significant discrimination from a person who enters to controlled area. However, positioning a person using an RF system is much easier than whose using an audio system, since absorption rate of an audio signal is much higher than an RF signal.
