Summary:

Electromagnetic waves underlie the present-day wireless communication. Thus, structure of electromagnetic waves and their propagation features that obtain communication are examined frequently. Free space propagation which is the essential type of propagation is used to get general information about design of systems. But for many applications, considering link from transmitter to receiver as only free space comes up short. In a system that wireless communication and living spaces are nested, the effects of electromagnetic waves to the environment which waves exist must also be examined. Because there are lots of national and international limitations for all services that operate in the UHF and VHF bands. The limitations are based on safety distance and electric field strength or power density which are determined as limit values.

In this thesis, it was studied on the determination of the electric field strength which is produced by the broadcast transmitter antenna masts at the Trabzon – Boztepe region, evaluation of these measured values according to limitations and comparison of the measured results with the calculated values of 2-ray propagation method. In 2-ray propagation method, not only direct way but also reflected wave from the ground is considered. So there will be more accurate results unlike the free space propagation. The calculations which are based on 2-ray propagation method are made by a matlab program without assumptions and shortenings. The basis of broadcasting and some electric field strength prediction methods for used bands are also mentioned.

The values that measured on different dates and the calculated values that based on the information about broadcast transmitter antennas were compared. It was determined that 2-ray propagation method was more suitable for TV broadcasting services at region where measurements were done. Also the measured values were tested with a limitation that uses ICNIRP and IEEE as references. All the results were below the limitations.
