Summary:

Electrical energy demand increases day by day due to the developing industry and growing population. New production facilities are established near to the primary energy sources and the produced energy is transported to consumption centers by transmission lines to meet this demand. The series capacitors are used to increase the transfer capacity by reducing the losses particularly at the long-distanced places between the production and the consumption centers. In addition to positive contributions provided to the network, it is known that the series capacitor affects operation of distance relay negatively.

In this thesis, a protection algorithm based on a synchronous phasor measurement is proposed by using K-NN classification method in order to protect the series-compensated transmission lines securely. This proposed algorithm has been tested in a sample radial network and the partial model of existing Türkiye network covering Kayabaşı Substation and related substations built on the Digsilent PowerFactory program. According to the obtained results, the communication settings of the relays have been rearranged by determining the fault location correctly on the short circuits created at certain points of the lines. In addition, a sample transmission line was created and load flow analyzes were carried out to investigate the benefits of the series capacitor to the transmission lines within the scope of study.
