Summary:

Electricity generation from solar energy is gaining importance day by day. The

installation of large power PV systems are costly and requires optimized operation for

energy efficiency and cost reduction. Since the power obtained from photovoltaic panels

varies depending on the environmental factors, it does not always give the same power

value during a day. In addition, when solar radiation value at each panel is not equal, a

shading condition occurs, resulting in large power losses. One of the most effective methods

commonly used to eliminate these negative effects is the one called maximum power point

tracking.

In this thesis, the effect of shading is analyzed in grid connected photovoltaic systems

and power losses due to shading are reduced. Symbiotic Organism Search and Whale

Optimization Algorithms are used to optimize the losses. The proposed methods are

modelled in MATLAB and used with grid connected PV system, which is simulated in

SIMULINK. Results are compared with the studies in literature and performances of the

proposed methods are evaluated. Simulation results show considerable improvements in

power loss reduction and acceptable performance on MPP tracking.
