Summary:

      In manufacturing sector, it is quite common to obtain parts that are smaller in size than large size stock materials. The fact that there are too many problems with similar structure and the complexity of the problem increases the interest in this problem.

In this study, size and usage information of the main plate, size and demand information of the smaller pieces to be cut were obtained from a company which manufactured aluminumcoating materials in Düzce province, where rectangle main plates were cut to smaller pieces with guillotine shears. A computer program that base on heuristic algorithm designed to solve similar problems in the past, was created. These data were solved with the help of this program. At the same time, data were solved with a commercial program. End of this study, solutions obtained with heuristic based program were benchmark with other solutions obtained with commercial program in terms of usage of main material and time required to obtain solution. Both methods have very close values in terms of the amount of the main material to be used and the heuristic algorithm based program is superior in terms of the time required for the solution. Within the scope of this study, visualization of the cutting plans formed by the heuristic algorithm based computer program or hybridization of the heuristic method with other heuristic or metaheuristic methods may be the subject of the researches in the future.
