Summary:

The objective of this study is to determine natural (238U, 232Th and 40K) and artificial (137Cs) radioactivity concentrations in soil and rock samples collected from surroundings Trabzon province and Sebinkarahisar county of Giresun, to calculate the absorbed dose rates and the annual effective dose equivalents and to assess the radiological hazards. The gamma radiation coming from terrestrial and cosmic radionuclides detailed measurements in air were performed in the studied areas. In addition, the seasonal variation of the indoor radon levels were determined.

The average activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs in soil samples of Trabzon and Sebinkarahisar were found to be 42.51±1.48 Bq/kg, 35.47±1.88 Bq/kg,

The indoor radon (222Rn) survey was performed in study areas, using nuclear track detector (CR-39). The annual average indoor radon concentrations in Trabzon and Sebinkarahisar were found to be 112.60 Bq/m3 and 158.09 Bq/m3, respectively.

In the study areas, the indoor and outdoor absorbed gamma dose measurements were performed. At each spot, a reading was taken at 1 m above ground level. The average outdoor and indoor gamma dose values were ascertained to be 58.94 nGy/h and 324.76 nGy/h for Trabzon and also, the average outdoor gamma dose value was found to be 205.25 nGy/h for Sebinkarahisar.
