Summary:

In the soil environment, the mobility of metals along the soil vertical profile and the fate of metals is regulated via their partitioning between soil and soil characteristics. The existence of trace metals in the solid phase is a result of many reactions with adsorption being the most important. Several X-ray analytical methods were applied in order to obtain different kinds of information from the same samples or particles. The concentrations of elements (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Sn, Ba ve Pb) were determined in all the soil samples using EDXRF (Epsilon 5) spectrometer. The spectroscopy was calibrated using Certified Reference Materials (CRM). In order to compare Epsilon 5 results, an ICP-MS spectrometer was used after microwave digestion of the samples. Soils of unknown origin were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The mineralogical analyses were carried out using X-ray diffraction spectrometer. The samples were analyzed also by EPMA in order to have information about their oxide contents. Semiquantitative calculation of the particle composition was carried out by a Monte Carlo Simulation. The hierarchical cluster analysis was used. For this purpose, the Integrated Data Analysis System (IDAS) was used. PCA with Varimax rotation was applied because orthogonal rotation minimizes the number of variables with a high loading on each component and facilitates the interpretation of results. Pearson correlation was used to identify the relationship between heavy metal contents and soil properties. The data on analysis of heavy metals at various points and depths were analyzed by one way analyses of variance (ANOVA). On the other hand, diffusion and convection parameters were identified owing to the degree of elemental mobility. Moreover, the mobility was calculated using background levels and elemental concentration of water samples in the area enables the assessment of comparison.
