Summary:

This study was done to determine indoor radon concentrations in dwellings and radioactivity levels in surrounding soils of the Samsun province.

Indoor radon studies had been conducted in Samsun, using SSNTD type nuclear track detector (CR-39). Radon measurements were done for 4 seasons in 127 dwellings in Samsun, selected as uniformly distributed on the surface area as possible. The radon concentrations varies from 23 Bq/m3 to 230 Bq/m3 with the annual mean concentration of 106 Bq/m3 for Samsun. Radon concentrations were recorded high in winter and low in summer for the provinces. The resulting estimated annual effective dose-equivalent due to inhalation of radon for inhabitants is 2.67 mSv/y for Samsun. The average activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th, 137Cs, and 40K were found to be 30.88 Bq/kg, 21.65 Bq/kg, 16.01 Bq/kg and 341.18 Bq/kg for Samsun, respectively. The mean value of total annual external gamma radiation dose equivalent for natural radionuclides was calculated to be 51.74 µSv/y for Samsun.
