Summary: It is concluded that shear-locking problem occurs in many cases if 4-noded finite element is used in the analysis, and that shear-locking problem occurred in several cases if 8-noded element is used can be omitted by using finer mesh, and that 17-noded finite element does not have any mechanisms. It is also concluded that 17-noded quadrilateral finite element can be effectively used in the analysis of plates subjected to uniformly distributed loads or earthquake excitations without any mechanisms, and that the use of this element can approximately reduce the mesh size to the half of those of the others, and that the effect of the thickness/span ratio on the earthquake behavior of the rectangular thick plates is generally larger than that of the aspect ratio.
