Summary:

Most of the Turkish population currently stays in masonry structures. Great earthquakes, occurred on the late years, shown that masonry structures were one of the badly damaged structures. It will be possible to prevent or minimize these damages against earthquakes by taking suitable precautions and studying static and dynamic behaviors of these structures.

According to the engineering services in Turkey, a serious knowledge complexity happens on the stage of modeling and computation on the subject of masonry structures. For this reason, putting forward the available knowledge and modeling techniques to profiting from available literature and codes, determining parameters which effecting on load carrying walls and investigating the influence on the general behavior of structure.

With this purpose, this study consists four chapters. In the first chapter; the summary of available literature, structural systems of masonry, materials, related codes and standards, static and dynamic behaviors of masonry structures with linear and nonlinear aspects are considered. In the second chapter; two of developing finite element codes are introduced and some analyses are performed using these codes. Also, some parametric studies have been performed with structural models for excamining the resistance of masonry walls (mortar and brick resistance, bond effects, position of vertical tie-columns and etc.). At the end of this chapter, a case study was performed on a masonry building that damaged during an earthquake. The third chapter is a conclusions and suggestions chapter following by reference list. In the appendix part of this thesis, some open source codes about finite element software and some information about usage of the programs are presented.

As a result; effects of mortar / brick resistance, bonding designs and configuration of vertical tie-columns on the load-bearing of masonry walls are putting forward and some open source finite element codes are presented for the use of researchers studying on this subject.
