Summary:

Adequacy and standards of transportation network of a country is an indicator of its development level. Road network in Turkey is insufficient as compared to developed countries; on the other hand, traffic, especially heavy vehicle traffic, in our roads is continuously increasing. This leads to serious problems to occur in road superstructure; limited financial resources make the subject more important. For this reason, optimum solutions should be generated in design and construction phases of a highway investment.

Today, asphalt roads constitute a big portion of highways. In contrast to developed countries, concrete road applications have begun recently in Turkey. The leading factor that makes concrete roads attractive is opportunity of supplying its raw materials from local sources.

In this study, use of self compacting concrete (SCC) as road concrete was investigated. In first part, importance, advantages and disadvantages of concrete roads, principles in design and material selection, a general look to SCC and general knowledge about surface structure of concrete roads were given. In second part, SCC mix designs were prepared by using two different types of aggregates, namely basalt and limestone. Also, another mix was prepared by lowering cement amount of basalt aggregated design and adding fly ash into it. A Control Mix, which does not include super plasticizer, was prepared for comparison of properties of SCC. Compressive strengths, flexural strengths, wearing amounts under wheel loads, and friction coefficients of these mixes were investigated and results were presented in tables and graphs. In third part, results were examined. In fourth part, results were explained and recommendations for future studies were given.
