Summary:

In this study SMA (Stone Mastic Asphalt) mixes widely used in asphalt pavement technology are discussed in detail and the hydrated lime effects on pavement performance as an additive was investigated together with the additives SBS (Kraton-D) and Fiber (Viatop-66). Performing Marshall Design and Marshall Ratio Test, Bitumen Infiltration Test, Resistance Test Against Deterioration Caused by Water, Repeated Creep Test, Indirect Tensile Test, Indirect Tensile Resistance Test, Wheel Tracking Tests on prepared samples was tried to describe hydrated lime effects to the hot asphalt mix performance in SMA mixes.

Literature research was made for the determination of the lime percentage to be used in the study and in conclusion 1% hydrated lime rate was adopted. During the research 108 for the designs (determination of the optimum bitumen percentage), 108 for the Marshall Ratio, Rpeated Creep, Indirect Tensile-Indirect Tensile Resistance and Resistance Against Deterioration Caused By Water Tests a total of 216 briquettes were produced. For Wheel Tracking Test 12 slabs were produced. hydrated Lime (SKK 80-T) used as an additive was put in the mix as % 1. Percentage of SBS (Kraton-D) was 5% and Fiber (Viatop-66) was 0,6 % respectively. Using above mentioned percentages additives are put into the mix solely and together with the others.

According to the performed tests it was found that, hydrated lime is included within all the designs giving the best test results, the parallelism observed when evaluating the values of fiber added and hydrated lime added mixes showed that hydrated lime can easily replace fiber additive material, besides using it with fiber gives higher values than resistance values in case solely fiber is used, also similar situations are detected in SBS added mixes, hydrated lime is an effective additive material and its performance when used with other additives should be considered.

It was concluded that in the addition of hydrated lime after defining aggregate properties and investigating hydrated lime-aggregate interaction, this additive which is advantageous with regard to availability and economy can make important contributions to SMA mixes.
