Title of the Thesis: Investigation of Behaviour of Architect Sinan’s Mosques Under Static and Dynamic Loads

Summary:

It is important to investigate reasons of the durability of Sinan’s structures which have been subjected to different enviromental conditions and earthquakes for a long time, also to examine the response of these structures under static and dynamic loads. There is no detailed study on bearing systems of Sinan’s structures. Aim of this study is to determine the parameters which define geometry of Sinan’s mosques and their effects on static and dynamic behaviour.

The study consists of three parts. In the first part, Architecture of Sinan, literature, summary, techniques of mosque construction, materials and their properties are presented. In the second part, static and dynamic analysis are performed on 28 Sinan’s 3D mosque models. According to the analyses, window area / whole wall area , arch thickness / arch opening, arch height / arch opening, hoop window area / whole hoop area, area of bearing parts on plan / whole area, dome area / whole bearing area, dome height / dome opening, elephant column area / bearing area on plan, elephant column height / elephant column area ratio are determined and their effects on system behaviour are examined. The third part is for results and suggestions. Literature list follows this part.

Consequently, Sinan’s mosques have adequate resistance under external loads, domes are effective during an earthquake, models reflect the behaviour of mosques sufficiently.
