Summary:

Whereas the increasing material and labour costs due to limited resources, engineers must ensure enough performance of structures with optimum cost and/or weight.

The main purpose of this study is to perform optimum cost design of cut and cover RC shallow tunnels using Artificial Bee Colony and Genetic Algorithms. This study consists of four chapters and two appendixes. General information is presented in first chapter. In second chapter; Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm tested on some sample designs, mathematical expressions of objective function, design variables and constraints for the design of shallow tunnels limiters are determined, with this expressions, optimum cost design of the Trabzon Kalekapısı junction underpass tunnel is carried out, and the results obtained are compared with the results obtained from traditional design. Third chapter is reserved the results and recommendations concluded from the whole study. This chapter is followed by the list of references, two appendixes and the authors biography.

Evaluated findings show that optimum cost design of cut and cover shallow rectangular RC tunnels can be made with Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm and Genetic Algorithm and the design with these algorithms can be more economic than the traditional ones.
