Summary:

The great loss of life and property in the earthquakes throughout the history indicates the importance of the earthquake-resistant building design. Seismic base isolation systems, an approach which has been developed on these issues, is used in recent years with developing technology in the field of eathquake engineering. In this study, seismic base isolation systems are introduced and mechanical properties of the isolators are shown. Moreover, modeling of base isolators are discussed by examining the methods used in the design of seismically isolated structures. As model buildings; all floor height of 3 meters 3, 5, 7, 12 and 15-storey reinforced concrete frame buildings are used for non-linear analyses in this thesis. They are designed with as conventional fixed based and seismic base isolation system after that structural behaviors against earthquakes were compared by carrying out time history dynamic analysis in SAP2000 software package. In the analysis, the maximum values obtained from three different seismic datas are taken into consideration. Structural behavior parameters such as periods, floor displacements, interstory drifts, absolute floor accelerations, base shear forces and base bending moments are covered as the comparative base depending on the height of the structure. In addition, damping contribution to the energy which appears during earthquake was examined with the hysteresis behavior of seismic base isolators. Based on obtained results, all structural behaviors except for displacement were improved for the seismically isolated buildings with seismic base isolation sytems as compared to the fixed-base buildings.
