Summary:

The walls that retain soil at different two levels and are subjected to lateral earth pressures are called retaining walls. Some controls are made in retaining wall designs for their safe behaviours. One of the most important control is settlement control. The retaining walls are designed frequently without settlement control. However retaining wall is as a structure and it gets damage even failure if over settlement occur. So, settlement of retaining walls should be calculated and compared with the permissible settlement values.

The aim of this study is calculation of consolidation settlements of retaining walls on cohesive soils and compare estimated settlements with permissible settlement values. For this, a computer program in Fortran Language is developed and calculated settlement values with program were compared with the permissible settlement values.

In this thesis, only apart, settlement on cohesive soils, of the settlement subject which is too large was studied.

In the first section of this study, general information about the retaining walls (such as their definition, classification, their usage in practice, earth pressures on them, controls for their design) are given.

In the second section, settlement phenomenon, causes of uniform and differential settlements, measures against such damages are given. Also, a computer program in Fortran Language is developed and used in for the calculation of consolidation settlement in two typical examples. The solution results are in good agreement with solution by hand. So, computer program is working well.

As a result, settlements of retaining walls should be computed and calculated settlements should be less than the permissible settlements.
