Summary:

Methods which are used to predict water retention curves which are beneficial to determine a lot of properties with related to soils are time-consuming, tedious, tiring and at the same time they are also very sensitive. Therefore, instead of the methods, transition from grain-size distribution to water retention curve that is very easy to determine was investigated.

At first, physical properties of the soil which was taken from Foundation Cut of North Retaning Wall of the Building of Mining Engineering Department at Blacksea Technical University was determined. Later water retention curve of soil was plotted by using an experimental method which is called fitler paper method.

Besides, water retention curve of soil was obtained by using a computer software which is called RETC and used to determine these curves.

Equations which are proposed by different researchers for water retention curve of soil were statistically evaluated with the suitability of the results of experiments carried on the soil.

The objective of this study is to predict water retention curve with the help of grain-size distribution curve. From grain-size distribution curve which was plotted according to experiment results determined by experimental studies was transformed into water retention curve by using Arya-Paris Model.

As a result, it was seen that water retention curves that were obtained by grain-size distribution curve and fitler paper method were suitable.
