Summary: The retaining walls which keep the soil at two different levels and are under the effect of the lateral earth pressures are rigid retaining structures. In order that the retaining wallsperform their functions safely, some checks are carried out. One of the most important control is settlement control during design stage. Whereas, the retaining walls are commonlydesigned without performing settlement control and damaged because of excessive settlement, even fractures, collapses are occurred. Therefore, the settlements on the retaining wallfoundation should be calculated and compared with the permissible settlement values. In this study, it is generally reviewed to define the settlements of the retaining walls onthe cohesionless soils by Standard Penetration and Cone Penetration Test results. The settlements are calculated by developed computer programs in Fortran Language instead ofmanual calculations which are time consuming and may have some errors. In the first section of this study, general information on the retaining walls(definitions, classifications, uses, acting lateral earth pressures and controls required during design stage) settlement condition, reasons for uniform and different settlements and theireffects are presented. In the second section, the settlement prediction methods, approaches related to the calculations for Standard Penetration and Cone Penetration Test results and stripfoundation settlements are explained. In the third section, some typical examples are studied and in the fourth section, some results are listed.Key Words : Retaining Walls, Settlement Control, Cohesionless Soil, Standard Penetration Test, Cone Penetration Test, Fortran Computer Programme |
