Summary:

It is known that tunnels, a kind of public works, are built for transportation, defending

and storing. Nowadays, it is required much more construction of these structures because

of broadening of cities, stabilization of road standards, increasing of defence and shelter

needs, being uneven or/and valuable of land. In Türkiye, transportation tunnels are built

widely. In addition, present conditions are required construction of defence tunnels.

The design of tunnels requires a cooperative study of engineers from different branches

more than other types of structures because of a special interaction between the tunnel and

the ground.

The principle goal of this study is to make synthesis study concerning subject of tunnels

and explain systematically known analytical methods used design of this structures by

easing their usage with same symbols by means of this study. Thus, it is thought that

engineers working subject on tunnel are provided for choosing suitable method compatible

      with ground.

The study performed for this purpose includes three main chapters and one appendix.

In the first chapter short history and classification of tunnels, essential investigations for

construction, choosing method compatible with ground and encountered problems during

construction are emphasized. In the second chapter, information about tunnel lining is

given and some known analytical and empirical methods used in their structural analysis

are explained by using same symbols. Furthermore, some reminding about finite element

methods is presented and numerical applications for one of the analytical methods are

made by developed computer program in this chapter.

The main results and suggestions are summarised in the third chapter and this last

chapter is followed by the list of references and an appendix including source code of

program developed for structural analysis of a tunnel lining and charts for empirical

      methods.
