Summary:

Soil improvement techniques are used increasingly for new projects to allow utilization of sites with poor subsurface conditions and to allow design and construction of needed projects despite poor subsurface conditions. Soil improvement modifies and increases the mechanical characteristics of the treated soil, most notable its compressive strength and modulus of elasticity, while simultaneously deceases its permeability. The jet grouting method is one of the most successful systems to achieve these results.

Jet grouting system differs substantially from the other ground improvement techniques – it breaks up the soil structure completely and performs deep soil mixing to create a homogeneous soil, which in turn solidifies. The jet grouting technique can be used in treating a wide range of soil types regardless of permeability or grain size distribution. Therefore the application fields of jet grouting are rapidly increasing.

This thesis covers the historical, theoretical and practical background of an in situ ground modification technique, jet grouting. In addition its types, design, execution, parameters, application fields, advantages and disadvantages are presented in this study. Finally this thesis also discusses a jet ground application performed under a railway subjected to differential settlement due to poor soil conditions.

Key Words: Soil stabilization, grounting techniques, jet grouting.
