Summary:

      The Marmara Earthquake in 1999 has shown that buildings out of the standards and not applying the foundation system suitable for the soil have caused the damage to be very huge.This unfortunate experience has led the people to seek for more secure building systems. In accordance with this topic, there has been new regulations and checks have been more often.

As a result of these developments, applications of mat-foundations system have begun to spread in the country (in Turkey). The firms have tried to persuade the purchasers by making a relation between the strength of the building and the mat-foundation and accordingly, the use of mat-foundation in our country has increased. However ; there have been few studies about the applications which the engineers can make use of.

      In this study, the calculation methods used for mat-foundations have been handled comparatively. The study consists of three main parts ;

The first part includes literature analysis on the subject. General information about the foundations is given and the bearing capacity is described. In relation with this subject, bearing capacity equations of Terzaghi, Myerof, Brinc-Hansen and Vesic are searched .

      It also includes information about soil-settlement conditions and reasons and the settlement types are described. The foundation types are given as subtitles. The firs part finally includes the mat foundation types and calculation methods.

In the second part , two types of mat-foundations are being analyzed by using rigid and numerical analysis methods.

      The third part includes the results of this study and the recommendations.
