Summary:

Turkey has been very active earthquake zone. Determine of the effects on the cost of earthquake and structure parameters are important. For this purpose, Turkish Earthquake Resistant Design Code and American Concrete Institute Building Code are compared and variation of building costs depends on the slab types are investigated in this thesis.

First chapter of the study is general information part. In this chapter, general information about response of structures subjected to earthquake ground motions and concrete slab systems are presented.

Second chapter of the study contain the studies, findings and investigations performed in this thesis. This section consists of three main parts. The first part covers the analyses and examinations of the model structures designed by different slab systems. In this part, selected structures are presented firstly. Baksteen and girder floor are selected as slab system in the model structures. Conventional frame and partition-frame systems are chosen as skeleton of the buildings. 2-story, 5-story and 8-story buildings common used in practice are considered in this part. One hundred meter square-buildings are selected as examples. Results obtained by analyses for selected members are given on tables. Costs of the buildings depend on the earthquake zone and slab systems are investigated comparatively in the end of this part. Second part of this chapter, Turkish and American Codes are examined relatively. Selected buildings are designed by considering Turkish and American Codes and the costs of buildings calculated for both Codes are compared in the last part of this chapter.

Third and last chapter is the result section and is followed by references.
