Summary:

Plates are structural elements which are commonly used in the building industry. A plate is considered to be a thin plate if the ratio of the plate thickness to the smaller span length is less than 1/20, it is considered to be a thick plate if this ratio is larger than 1/20.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the linearly tapered thick plates using Mindlin’s theory and to determine the effects of the different thickness/span ratio, aspect ratio and boundary conditions on the free responses of the tapered thick rectangular plates subjected to uniformly distributed loads.

It is conluded that, in general, the effect of the changes in the aspect ratio on the absolute maximum displacement and bending moments is more effective than the effect of the changes in thickness/smaller span ratio.
