Summary:

Block movements which we denominate as slope failures and landslides are natural disasters that we experience frequently due to our country’s geological, geodesic and climatic properties. Block movements mostly occur in the West Blacksea, East Blacksea and Marmara regions of Turkey. A considerable amount of economical and social losses occur in regions where landslides happen frequently. None of block movements happen suddenly, even the quickest landslide shows indications before it happens. Losses are the consequences of not realizing the danger prior to its occurrence. First, the areas in which landslide occur should be determined and residential areas should be settled according to this.

The landslides examined in this study occurred in front of the Yard Area in Istanbul City, Avcılar Town, Istanbul University Avcılar Campus, and IETT Bus stop. Drillings were made to discover the landslide area’s geological structure and subterranean water situation. Area’s engineering properties were determined by making field, laboratory and desk studies. Piles shoring systems and drainage applications were used to stabilize the landslide area. Landslide area’s sections were determined and digitized in computer environment. Stability calculations were made through Plaxis software by using area’s engineering properties. Derived data shows that the measures taken on these slopes have stabilized soil.
