Summary:

One of the purposes of this thesis is to obtain natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios called dynamic characteristics of stone arch bridges as experimental and theoretical. The other purpose is to update the finite element model of stone arch bridges by using Operational Modal Analysis Method.

This thesis consists of four chapters. In the first chapter, general information about why is important to determine dynamic characteristics of structures and which methods can be used to obtain these is given. After that some studies which have been made about this subject previously are presented. In addition these, Theoretical Modal Analysis Method and the formulations used in this method are explained for one and multi degree of freedom systems separately. In this chapter, Operational Modal Analysis Method, the equipments used in this method and testing procedures are given. Also, formulations used to obtain experimental dynamic characteristics have been given. Finally, the methods are used to generate finite element model of the historical structures and a little information about stone arch bridges are presented. In the second chapter, finite element models, experimental and theoretical dynamic characteristics of selected bridges have been given. After analytically and experimentally identified dynamic characteristics are compared with each other, the finite element models are updated in this chapter. In the third chapter, conclusions and recommendations obtained from the experimental and theoretical analysis have been given. In the last chapter which is the fourth, the references used in this thesis are presented.

In the end of this study, it has been seen that Operational Modal Analysis method which carried out by adequate measuring devices and equipments can be apply to obtain dynamic characteristics and to update finite element models of stone arch bridges which have sophisticated geometric features, material types, complex dynamic behaviour.
