Summary:

In Geotechnical Engineering, laboratory and field tests are used in order to investigate soil with depth. In cohesionless soils, it is too difficult or impossible to take undisturbed samples, because of these reasons field tests are needed in this kind of soils. Basic field tests are Standard Penetration Test, Cone Penetration Test, Plate Loading Test and Pressuremeter Test. There are some correlations between parameters of these tests. In this study, qc=400N (International System, SI) correlation between Standard Penetration Test Number (SPT-N) and Cone Penetration Resistance (qc) is examined by using settlement of shallow foundations. In calculations done, it seems in literature that Terzaghi-Peck and Meyerhof Methods (SPT Group) for Standard Penetration Test, Buisman-De Beer and Schmertmann Methods (CPT Group) for Cone Penetration Test are giving more suitable settlement values than other methods.

In this study, in 1st part; information about foundations, condition for foundations, settlements of foundations, etc. are given. In 2nd part; estimation methods of settlements, methods based on field tests, the flow logics of computer programs written for calculating of the settlements at spread and one-way strip footing system by using Terzaghi-Peck, Meyerhof, Buisman-De Beer and Schmertmann Methods are given. In 3rd part; typical numerical examples for spread and one-way strip footing system are solved and the results are given with tables and figures. In 4th part; comparison of results, in 5th part; some results of this study are explained, in 6th part; suggestion for future studies are given, in 7th part; references are given and in8th part the listing of computer programs which are used in this study are given.

In solved examples, CPT group gives smaller values than SPT group in spread footing system. Average relative error is 65%. In one-way strip footing system CPT group gives greater values than SPT group. Average relative error is 53%. Thus, it is clear that qc=400N (SI) correlation in terms of the settlement must be corrected.
