Summary:

The main theme of the study carried out is to investigate the reasons of the cracks having occured in a freight terminal which has been built recently.

The freight terminal in the study in question has been built in 76 m wide and 137 m long area. The main structure is a two bay steel construction consisting of secondary lattice girders, which span from outer columns to inner main lattice girders.

It is well known that, the structure should be designed to be safe under all conditions of its useful life and it should not become ‘unserviceable’ during its lifetime. That means, structure should be free from risk of collapse, cracks and the other failures. The construction chosen for this study has lead to failures (cracks) in the lattice girders. These failures can mainly be recognized in the junction plates. In the scope of this thesis, following issues are discussed in detail:

•Verification of a static design of the main steel structure with regard to the standards which were to be applied at the time the structure was build.

•Design of the steel structure taking the current standards into account and comparison with the result of the calculation using the older standards.

•Analysis of the connections of the lattice girders using common design models and proposals for the improvement of the insufficient joint design.
