Summary:

Topographical and hydrogeological structure of Turkey and excessive rainfalls in some regions provide big and small hydroelectric power potentials. Especially, in the Eastern Black Sea Basin, there is quite important surface water potential due to having large amount of rainfall, and also the region is very profitable in terms of hydroelectric powers thanks to huge falls. In 2001, in this basin, energy potential started to be commissioning and has been applied for hydroelectric power over the average level of Turkey, following the validity of 4628 coded Electric Market Law.

In this study, the present situation of fossil fuels types such as natural gas, fuel, coal and nuclear energy, and renewable energy types such as wind, sun, biomass, geothermal, hydraulic, hydrogen, tide and wave energy, and negative and positive aspects and effects on environment of hydroelectric powers in Turkey and world were investigated. In addition, the range according to the cities, total situated power and producible energy amount of hydroelectric powers and hydroelectric potential in the Eastern Black Sea Basin were determined. The evaluation case of hydroelectric energy potential in the basin together with the developed projects as part of this law was also established. The state of the powers in the basin in comparison with the other powers, which were developed as part of the same law, in Turkey and their total hydroelectric energy production contributions were compared with the hydroelectric potential which were determined for Turkey and the evaluation case of total hydroelectric potential in Turkey was assessed. Finally, comparison of gross electricity energy production of Turkey was conducted in terms of basic resources and manufacturers through energy amount produced by the projects in the basin

As a result of this study, it is determined that there is significant hydroelectric potential in the Eastern Black Sea Basin, and this potential is started to be utilized with Hydroelectric Power Stations in the scope of 4628 coded Electric Market Law.
