Summary:

      In the important percentage of the RC framed buildings in our country, band windows are commonly used for the purpose of ventilation and lighting, in spite of they are not considered at design stage. These applications restrict the lengths of the columns and leads to short column behavior under the horizontal seismic forces. Because of the short column effect, considerable amount of buildings have been collapsed or seriously damaged after the important earthquakes have been occurred. Currently, it is well known that, there are a lot of buildings which have similar characteristic properties, and have collapsing risk, in case an earthquake may happen in the future.

In this study, it has been aimed that the investigation of windows’ dimension which decreases short column effect caused by basement floor band windows with the height of 1/4 of shear walls’ height. For this purpose, band window space at the shear walls are strengthened with RC brick elements, which are 0.25 and 0.375 times of the span, thus, the dimensions of the band window which the short column effect is minimum was experimentally investigated. To strengthen the short column effect caused by the band windows, test models were modeled using steel profiles instead of RC brick elements to investigate their behaviors analytically, and experimental and analytical results were compared.

       The evaluation findings from experimental and analytical studies showed the strengthening of band window spaces using RC brick elements decreased the short column effect. Besides, the strengthening of that using steel profiles were effective as well. However, when more than 0.25 times of span, strengthening with steel profiles wasn’t so effective.
