Summary:

In the study, some physical and mechanical properties of polymer lightweight concrete were investigated. In the first chapter of the thesis, polymers, polymer concretes and lightweight concretes are detailed. In the second chapter, experimental work is given. Pumice aggregate was used as lightweight aggregate in the production of lightweight concretes. Totally 12 concrete mixes with two different cement dosages as 400 kg/m3 and 500 kg/m3 were prepared. The water to cement ratio was kept constant as 0.35 for all mixes. Fly ash was incorporated for some of the mixes. Styrene-butadiene rubber latex (SBR) at ratios of 0%, 5% and 10% by weight of cement was adopted for each group of mixes. The flexural strength, compressive strength, abrasion resistance, water absorption and sorptivity of the concretes were determined. Based on the findings obtained, it may be concluded that SBR latex inclusion do not contribute to the flexural and compressive strength of concrete. However, it improved significantly the wear resistance, water absorption and sorptivity characteristics of the lightweight concrete.
