Summary:

Today, the excessive use of resources in buildings causes environmental, economic and social problems. It is becoming increasingly necessary to create sustainable structures that are harmless to the environment, with low resource consumption and high energy efficiency. In our country, fosil fuels are used as the fuel type in the buildings. Since fosil fuels are non-renewable energy ources, they are depleted over time, their costs increase and they have negative effects on the environment. Using renewable energy sources instead of non-renewable fosil fuels will play on important role both in the use of harmless energy to the environment and in lowering energy costs. The advantages of renewable energy sources are that they do not pollute the environment, their cost decreases day by day and they renew themselves continously. When the use of energy is analyzed on a sectoral basis, it is known that approximately 30% of the energy used is used in buildings. When this energy consumed in buildings is met from renewable energies and used efficiently, it provides continuity in energy. In addition, the high number of old buildings in our country increases energy consumption and reduces energy efficiency. The way to prevent this situation is to apply thermal insulation to the outer shell of the building.

The aim of this thesis is to examine the use of renewable energy and effective resource use in buildings and to demonstrate how sustainability principles and methods are applied in buildings. In this study, when both coal and natural gas are used as a fuel in a sample building in Rize province and in the same building in Eskişehir, the specific heat loss and annual heating energy requirement of the uninsulated state and the insulated state according to TS 825 are calculated and compared. As a result of the use of different insulation materials and thicknesses in the outershell of the building, the initial investment cost, the effect of the insulation thickness on the heat saving and the reimbursement periods of the expenditures were calculated and evaluated.
